요즈음 예언, 진짜에요? (Is the Gift of Prophecy Still Valid?)- 영어/한글
I some times receive emails or text messages from people, claiming to have received a prophecy from God concerning me. However, some of these messages are vague and could be interpreted in countless ways. Others seem to be intended to manipulate me.
In the New Testament era, prophecy is given to build up the church. "Prophets speak to encourage, comfort and strengthen people.” (1 Corinthians 14:3)
I have had three experiences that I believe were genuine prophecies from God.
The first experience happened when I was invited to become the senior pastor of Houston Seoul Baptist Church. I was hesitant to accept the call due to the low Korean population in Houston. I was worried that the job would be to simply manage the church rather than lead people to Christ. Then a sister who I believed had the gift of prophecy said she had a dream about me. She envisioned me fishing in a small pond, catching an abundance of fish. She was surprised that so many fish could be caught in a small pond, but when she looked closely, she realized the pond was connected to the ocean through a channel. Her message gave me the confidence that there were many souls to be saved in Houston, so I accepted the call.
The prophecy turned out to be true. During the 20 years I served as the senior pastor of Seoul Baptist Church of Houston, I baptized 2,342 people, even though the number of Koreans in the city was only about 20,000. Some of those people were international students from Korea attending university in Houston, medical doctors or professors on exchange programs, and people sent by their companies to work for Houston branch offices for limited times. The small pond represented Houston, and the vast ocean symbolized Korea.
The second experience happened when I was being urged to host a seminar on house church. I was not a well-known pastor, nor was Seoul Baptist Church a well-known church then. I was hesitant to host, fearing that it would not attract many attendees. Then I attended a revival in Toronto, Canada where, at the end of his talk, the speaker asked pastors to stand up if they wanted to receive a prophetic word. When it was my turn, he said he saw in his mind a picture of a busy train station where a lot of railroads merged. He asked me if that picture meant anything to me. After hearing this, I felt God was speaking to me about the seminar, promising that a lot of people would come.
And that prophecy turned out to be true. A large number of pastors and missionaries from around the globe attended the seminar, and house churches sprang up in North America, Korea, and Australia. Now the house church has spread to multiple mission fields, and house church seminars are offered by indigenous churches for indigenous pastors in more than ten countries.
The third experience happened last year, when I posted a message on Facebook to mark the third anniversary of my wife's passing. I expressed my regret for not loving her enough and not being grateful enough. I titled the message ‘I'm so sorry, my love’. A pastor left this comment: “When you meet your wife in heaven, she will say, 'I understand everything, so don't feel sorry. Actually I'm sorry I couldn't understand you. If you have any pain in your heart because of me, forgive me.’”
The tone and manner of the message was so like my wife's that I felt these words were divinely inspired to comfort me.
Some people believe that the gift of prophecy ended with the completion of the New Testament, but there is little biblical support for this claim. I believe that the gift of prophecy is still valid today, and I hope church members encourage, comfort, and strengthen each other through the word from the Lord.

하나님께서 주신 예언의 말씀이라며 보내주는 이메일이나 문자를 받을 때가 있습니다. 읽어보면 내용이 구체적이지 않고 두루뭉실해서, 정말 성령님이 주신 말씀인지 의심스러울 때가 많습니다. 성령님의 이름을 빌어 나를 조종하려는 것 같은 인상을 받기도 합니다.
예언의 은사가 주어진 목적은 교회를 세우기 위함입니다. “예언하는 사람은 … 덕을 끼치고, 위로하고, 격려하는 말을 합니다[고전 14:3].” 그러므로 이런 목적에 부합하지 않는 예언은 가짜이거나, 이상한 영이 주는 메시지일 가능성이 높습니다.
제게는 하나님이 주시는 예언의 말씀이라고 믿지 않을 수 없었던 세 번의 경험이 있습니다.
첫째는, 휴스턴서울교회로부터 담임 목사 초빙을 받았을 때였습니다. 휴스턴에는 한인이 많지 않다고 해서 주저하고 있을 때였습니다. 한인이 많지 않으면 영혼구원이 안 될 것이고, 그렇다면 관리 목회를 해야 하는데, 저를 관리 목회는 못할 것 같았기 때문입니다. 이때 어떤 분이 저에 관해 꿈을 꾸었다고 하면서 이렇게 말했습니다. “최 목사님이 작은 연못에서, 낚시를 하고 있는데, 많은 물고기가 잡혔습니다. 작은 연못에서 어떻게 저리 많은 물고기를 잡힐 수 있을까 싶어서 자세히 보니까 연못이 바다와 연결되어 있었습니다.”
이 말이, 한인이 많지 않더라도 많은 영혼을 구원을 하도록 해주시겠다는 하나님의 말씀으로 들려서, 담임 목사 초빙을 수락했습니다. 그리고, 휴스턴에서 20년 목회 하면서 2,342명에게 침례를 주었습니다. 휴스턴 한인은 2~3만 밖에 안 되는 작은 연못일지 모르지만, 넓은 바다인 한국으로부터 많은 사람들이 유학으로, 연수로, 주재원으로 와서 예수를 믿었기 때문입니다.
둘째는, 가정교회 세미나 개최를 권유 받고있을 때였습니다. 이 권유 앞에 주저하고 있었습니다. 제가 알려진 목회자가 아니고, 서울교회가 알려진 교회가 아닌데, 누가 참석하겠나 싶어서였습니다. 그 즈음에 아내를 위하여 캐나다에서 개최되는 어떤 캐나다 교회 은사 집회에 참석했는데, 말씀이 끝난 후 강사가 예언의 말씀을 받고 싶은 목회자들을 일어나라고 했습니다. 저도 일어 났는데, 이분이 저를 보며, 성령님께 그림을 보여주시는데, 기차역에 많은 철로가 있고 많은 기차가 모여든다고 하면서, 무슨 의미인지 짐작이 가느냐고 물었습니다.
이것이 세미나에 많은 사람들을 보내주시겠다는 하나님의 말씀으로 들렸습니다. 그래서 세미나 주최를 결심하게 되었고, 세계 각처에서 수 많은 목회자들과 선교사들이 당시 알려지지 않았던 휴스턴에 찾아와서 세미나를 수강했고, 가정교회는 한국으로, 대양주로, 선교지로 뻗어 나가게 되었습니다. 현재 현지인 교회가 지역 목회자들을 대상으로 가정교회 세미나를 개최하는 곳만도 아세아, 아프리카, 중남미 등 10개국이 넘습니다.
셋째는, 작년 아내 천국 간 3주기를 맞아서 페이스북에 글을 올렸을 때였습니다. 아내를 더 사랑하지 못했고, 더 고마워하지 못했던 것을 후회하며, ‘여보, 정말 미안해’라는 제목으로 글을 올렸습니다. 그때 제 아내를 만나본 적도 없는 어떤 은사 사역하는 목사님이 다음과 같은 댓글을 달았습니다. “아주 훗날에 천국에서 사모님 만나시면 사모님께서, ‘내가 다 이해하니까, 미안해 하지 마. 당신을 다 이해해 주지 못 해 오히려 내가 미안했어 … 행여나 맘속에 나로 인해 상처가 있다면 용서해’라고 하실 겁니다.”
용어나 말투가 완전히 아내 것이었습니다. 얼마나 울었는지 모릅니다. 주님께서 예언의 말씀을 통해 저를 위로해 주신다는 생각이 들었습니다.
예언을 비롯한 성령의 은사가 신약성경의 완성과 더불어 끝났다고 말하는 사람들이 있습니다. 그러나 성경적인 근거가 희박합니다. 교회에서 예언이 활성화 되어 성도들이 주님의 말씀을 받아 서로가 서로에게 덕을 끼치고, 위로하고, 격려하면 좋겠습니다.
